Livingston Parish to declare state of emergency
LIVINGSTON — Livingston Parish President Mike Grimmer plans to call for a state of emergency when the council meets tonight and a voluntary evacuation of areas south of Interstate 12 and the La. 42 area starting at 7 a.m. Saturday as Tropical Storm Gustav heads toward the Gulf of Mexico.
If Gustav continues on a track that takes it through the parish, Grimmer said today that he will make the voluntary evacuation of low-lying areas in the southern part of the parish mandatory on Sunday. Those areas include the Killian, Maurepas, Port Vincent and Springfield areas.
During a news conference this morning, Grimmer said key parish, municipal and law enforcement officials have met and “we’re fueled up and ready to go, and we’re going to take this one very seriously.”
Officials plan to make shelter announcements later, Grimmer said, but they hope to keep the shelters open for parish residents. He urged residents to begin their own preparations and not wait until Monday.
Grimmer said the concern in many parts of the parish will be high winds if Gustav hits, but low-lying areas also face the possibility of heavy flooding due to storm surge through Lake Maurepas. Gustav could become a Category 3 hurricane by the time it reaches landfall next week, he said.
Parish officials have set up a Web site to provide emergency information, http://www.preparelivingston.org. Residents should call 911 only for emergencies, but they should call the Department of Public Works at (225) 686-3030 or the Office of Emergency Preparedness at (225) 686-3066 for debris and other concerns.
