U.S. Rep. Don Cazayoux landed in Baghdad on Wednesday as part of a four-man congressional delegation wanting to see firsthand the situation U.S. troops face in Iraq.

The congressmen are expected to view Operation Iraqi Freedom and also Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, according to a news release and e-mail from Cazayoux’s staff Wednesday.

The delegation plans to visit with soldiers on the ground and assess the progress the U.S. is making to defeat al-Qaida and the Taliban.

While the Democratic National Convention is going on in Denver, Cazayoux, D-New Roads, said in the release that he believes the most important place for him to be at the time is overseas with the nation’s troops.

“It is essential in my capacity as a congressman to be able to make informed decisions on important issues of the day,” Cazayoux said.

Cazayoux said the trip will also aid him in his position on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, allowing him broader understanding of the challenges that returning veterans face.

Also traveling with Cazayoux on the trip are Joe Donnelly, D-Indiana; Steve King, R-Iowa; and John McHugh, R-New York.
