PORT ALLEN — Sheriff’s investigators recovered the body of a Brusly man from the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway at 6:58 a.m. Tuesday, the West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office reported.

Sheriff’s Maj. Leonard Tobias said Lawrence Burks, 47, was on a fishing trip with two friends Monday evening when a seat in the boat broke, throwing Burks into the water.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene of the boating accident shortly before 4 p.m. Monday, but were unable to find Burks.

The search was suspended later Monday as inclement weather rolled through the area, Tobias said.

Burks’ body was found in a stretch of the waterway near La. 415 when the search resumed Tuesday, Tobias said.
