Board OKs attendance, performance incentives
ZACHARY — The Zachary Community School Board approved a cash incentive Thursday for employees who have perfect attendance for a semester and a possible payment if Zachary is again the state’s top performing school district.
Each full-time employee would receive $500 if the district repeats for the fourth consecutive year as Louisiana’s No. 1 district in accountability rankings.
The rankings have been announced annually in the spring, but Testing Coordinator Michelle Clayton said the state may release them this fall, based on last year’s test scores and other criteria.
Clayton said she cannot say with certainty that Zachary would repeat as the highest-ranked district, but said, “We’ll be ranked very high.”
The board also agreed to again pay employees $100 each if they have perfect attendance for a semester. Last school year, 37 employees received the extra pay, Superintendent Warren Drake said.
Drake also reported that the beginning of school was the smoothest Zachary has ever had since becoming an independent district.
Enrollment is 4,469 students, an increase of nearly 500 students over last year’s enrollment, he said.
The high school now has 1,270 students, Drake said.
“We will definitely move up to 5-A in athletics when the Oct. 1 enrollment is taken,” Drake said, referring to the state’s highest classification for high school sports.
The board also voted to take bids for six 71-passenger buses and one 48-passenger bus for student activities, as well as
for new high school band uniforms.
Band Director Jason Venable estimated 165 new uniforms would cost between $70,000 and $95,000.
