State group recognizes Gramercy’s water effort
GRAMERCY — Mayor Herman Bourgeois presented aldermen and town employees with plaques after the Louisiana Municipal Association recognized the town’s efforts to upgrade its water system
“We now have a major upgrade in the town’s potable water system,” Bourgeois told the Board of Aldermen on Monday night. “We can now serve the residents with a clean, reliable, and drinkable water supply.”
Bourgeois accepted Gramercy’s achievement award Saturday at the LMA’s conference in Lafayette.
Bourgeois told the board the town spent $1.48 million on
the water system improvements, with $600,000 of that amount coming from the town’s budget.
An $80,000 Delta Regional Authority grant and an $800,000 Environmental Protection Agency grant funded the balance, he said.
The town added a 300,000-gallon ground water storage tank and plans to refurbish its existing tank, giving the town 600,000 gallons of treated water on hand at all times, Bourgeois said.
To help lower the cost of chemically treating the water, the town bought a 75-kilowatt generator and installed a chlorine dioxide system. Workers replaced check valves and installed a baffle.
