Fenroy meets Fan Day demand

LAFAYETTE — Tyrell Fenroy sat at a table signing autographs at Cajun Field on Sunday evening, writing with a felt-tipped marker almost as quickly as he explodes past opposing defenses.

Fenroy, who this season could become the all-time leading rusher for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, was the main target of those seeking autographs from ULL players on the stadium’s breezy concourse area for the school’s annual Fan Day.

Many of the fans, wearing ULL’s red and white school colors, thrust T-shirts, autograph books, diminutive Ragin’ Cajuns helmets and just about everything else at Fenroy, who occasionally affixed his No. 32 jersey number next to his name.

One of those autograph seekers was Lafayette resident Ted Daigle, who with his four sons, Max, Gabe, Sam and John Thomas, stood in a line about 20 yards long and two deep, waiting for a chance to obtain Fenroy’s  signature.

“My sons have been talking about this for two weeks now. We have been watching (Fenroy) since he was a freshman and my boys just like the excitement that he brings to the team.

“If (Fenroy’s autograph) is the only one we get, it’s got to be his,” Daigle said.

Fenroy, of LaPlace, said he didn’t mind the  attention.

“No, I’m not tired at all. This feels good, awesome, to have the fans show their support for the team as we go into the season,” Fenroy said.

The annual event, which drew a university-estimated 2,000 people last year, probably attracted more Sunday, said ULL Athletic Director David Walker.

In addition to the football players, fans mingled with members of the volleyball team and girls’ soccer teams, who also penned autographs.

Fans were attracted to the event with live music from two Lafayette area bands, Josh Taylor Bands and Stewart Street Band, free food, T-shirts, volleyball and football team posters.

Even the skydivers’ routine which opened the event at 5:30 p.m., had a Cajuns’ flavor.

The four divers who landed on Cajun Field’s synthetic playing surface were from Port Barre, Erath, Lafayette and New Iberia.
