HAMMOND — Members of the Humane Society of Louisiana announced at a press conference today that they are launching an investigation into the Tangipahoa Parish Animal Shelter’s decision to euthanize 170 dogs and cats on Monday.

Standing in front of barriers blocking the driveway to the animal shelter on Club Deluxe Road, Jeff Dorson, chief investigator with the nonprofit society, and Hammond chapter President Randy Stegall said they will file a public-records request seeking documents on the decision to put down the animals, the treatment of animals at the shelter and the outcome of cruelty investigations by the shelter’s animal control officers.

Dorson said they also plan to ask the Tangipahoa Parish Council on Monday night to create an oversight committee that will have access to records and be able to create protocols to prevent any future need for such drastic actions at the shelter.

“If we could have been advised prior to this, each of us could have took home nine or 10 animals until the cleanup was over instead of euthanizing all the animals,” Stegall said.

The shelter remains closed to the public today as the parish continues the quarantine. Parish officials have said that the 170 animals had to be euthanized because of an unknown, highly contagious airborne virus that sickened both dogs and cats on Monday.
