Holden responds to flyer

  • Published: Aug 1, 2008 - UPDATED: 5:13 p.m.

Baton Rouge Mayor-President Melvin L. “Kip” Holden released the following statement today in response to a pamphlet being circulated in the city:

“I have in hand a flyer allegedly signed by an unknown minister intentionally making false, inflammatory and extremely damaging accusations against me personally. The statements in the flyer are not only false, but they also include an altered copy of the official photo used on our Mayor’s Office Web site. We have been advised that the preparation, payment for, mailing and delivery of this flyer possibly violate several state criminal statutes and possibly federal laws because of the use of the United States Postal Service.

“I have asked both the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to conduct a thorough investigation as to which crimes may have been committed. We are tracing the true source of this attack now and have received reliable information that the distribution of the material is being done by persons closely aligned with one of my opponents in the current mayor’s race

“Kurt Sharper, the brother of Metro council member Byron Sharper, has distributed these flyers in public buildings, and we have provided his identity to law enforcement as a source of information and involvement.

“While I recognize that we must sometimes endure personal attacks from political enemies when we hold public office, this type of false and malicious attack is hurtful to the reputation of our city-parish; it is hurtful to the others who were used in this attempt to harm me; it is hurtful to the men and women who work for our city-parish; and it is hurtful to my family.

“For Baton Rouge to keep moving forward, it is important that fair and impartial elections are not tainted by underhanded, scurrilous and illegal activities by a few who feel they have lost their grip on power. As mayor-president, I owe the citizens of East Baton Rouge Parish my promise that we will not turn back to the politics of the past as we are gaining ground as a great community of the future.”
