ST. GABRIEL — Although a grand jury declined to indict a teacher at East Iberville Elementary School on a count of cruelty to a juvenile, school authorities said Friday she had been fired.

Parents of a child who attends the school filed a complaint against Julie A. Landry, 46, of Plaquemine, accusing her of forcing their son to unclog a stopped-up toilet with his bare hands on May 7.

St. Gabriel police arrested and booked Landry on the criminal count May 9.

On Tuesday, parish grand jury members returned a “no true bill,” meaning they did not find enough cause to prosecute the third-grade teacher for intentional or negligent mistreatment of a child, said Susan Mire, deputy clerk of court in Iberville Parish.

Following the alleged incident, School Superintendent Ed Cancienne recommended that Landry be placed on leave with pay pending an investigation.

On Friday, Cancienne said Landry — a first-year teacher in training — had been dismissed from the school system.

Landry was in the alternative certification program of the Louisiana Resource Center for Education, meaning that she was working as a teacher on a trial basis, Cancienne said.

Despite the grand jury’s decision, Cancienne made it clear that Landry has no future with the school system.

“We thought it best for the school system that she not be employed,” Cancienne said.

Calls made to Landry’s Plaquemine home Friday went unanswered.
