LSU picked to finish second in SEC West
HOOVER, Ala. -- LSU, the reigning BCS and SEC champion, was picked Friday to finish second in the SEC Western Division in a vote of media attending SEC Football Media Days.
LSU got 21 first-place votes and 120 points overall. Auburn, picked to win the SEC West, got 48 first-place votes and 99 points overall.
One point is awarded for a first-place vote, two for second, with fewest points being best.
Four LSU players were named to the All-SEC first team: offensive lineman Herman Johnson, defensive end Tyson Jackson, linebacker Darry Beckwith and place-kicker Colt David. Four other Tigers -- wide receiver Demetrius Byrd, tight end Richard Dickson, offensive tackle Ciron Black and defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois -- were named to the second team.
Only Auburn had more picks overall with nine. Only Florida had more first-team selections with five, though the Gators had no one on the second team.
Florida was a surprisingly solid pick to win the SEC East over highly regarded Georgia. Florida got 45 first-place votes and 98 points, while Georgia had 23 first-place votes and 121 points.
The Gators were also selected to win the SEC overall with 36 votes to 18 for Georgia. Auburn had 13 overall first-place votes, while LSU, Tennessee and Ole Miss had one each.
