The city-parish will activate red light cameras at seven additional intersections next week, bringing the total number of Baton Rouge intersections with such cameras to 15, Department of Public Works officials said Wednesday.

DPW said the cameras will be activated Thursday, July 31, and two more cameras will come online in August.

Red-light cameras have already recorded 5,710 violations since the city-parish installed its first camera in February, DPW data shows.

By far the most cited intersection was College Drive at Interstate 10 eastbound, where 2,116 motorists were ticketed.

That intersection was followed by Essen Lane at I-10, where 1,422 motorists were cited.

Sarah Edel, a DPW senior engineering intern, said the new intersections were selected because they had a high number of right-angle crashes.

“Those are the types of crashes that you would expect to be reduced by installing photo enforcement equipment,” she said.

DPW traffic engineers also did not want to install cameras at intersections that already had problems with rear-end crashes because those types of accidents can increase in frequency after cameras are installed, Edel said.

Both types of crashes were evaluated, she said, and the city-parish’s contractor took video at each location to count the number of red light violations.

Edel said the crash data and video were used together to narrow down the list and determine which intersections would get cameras.
