PONCHATOULA — A middle-aged man with dreadlocks worn in a ponytail is being sought on a complaint that he stole a truck and shot its driver Tuesday evening after a failed attempt to steal another vehicle, the Ponchatoula Police Department reported.

The fugitive is described as a black man with gold teeth, 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, who wore dark pants and a gray shirt, according to a police statement issued Wednesday.

The man is wanted for prosecution on counts of attempted murder, carjacking, aggravated battery and attempted theft of a vehicle, police said.

The man, who may be driving the stolen white 2004 Ford Ranger extended cab pickup with a chrome toolbox, is believed to be on the run and not from the area, Police Chief Bry Layrisson said Wednesday.

The fugitive is accused of attempting to steal a vehicle from the parking lot of the Microtel Inn on West Pine Street in Ponchatoula at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when the owner approached him, police said.

The two struggled, but the wanted man fled to Ellis Street. There, he brandished a handgun toward Giles Smith of Hammond, demanded his truck and shot him once in the inner leg area, stealing the Ford pickup, police said.

Layrisson said the two incidents were only minutes apart. He said the man was caught on a surveillance camera in the motel lounge and that police are working on a picture from the video footage.

He said the man visited other businesses in the area earlier Tuesday.

The Ponchatoula Fire Department arrived on the scene and treated Smith. Acadian Ambulance  took him to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond for treatment of his wound. Microtel Inn owner Michelle Aycock is offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the wanted man, police said. Crime Stoppers, (800) 554-5245, is also offering a reward, police said.

Call the Ponchatoula Police Department at (985) 386-6548.
