State Treasurer John Kennedy will head straight into the November general election for U.S. Senate after his only Republican opponent withdrew from the race Tuesday.

J. Jacques Boudreaux of Baton Rouge, a self-employed landscape contractor, said he just did not generate the interest he anticipated since signing up to run on July 11.

“Realistically, I didn’t have a chance of winning,” Boudreaux said. “But other than that, the short time I did it, it was a great experience.”

Boudreaux said he liked meeting with voters and learning how the process works. But he said he spent more time talking about Kennedy and the Republican Party than he did about himself as a candidate in the race.

The race now consists of incumbent U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La.; Kennedy, R-Zachary; Libertarian Richard Fontanesi of Baton Rouge; No Party candidate “Jay” Patel of Hammond; and Robert Stewart of New Orleans, who listed his party affiliation as “other.”

Since no party primary election is necessary, all the candidates will be on the Nov. 4 general election ballot.

In a general election, usually candidates have to win more than 50 percent of the vote. But in the Nov. 4 general election, the candidate with the most votes will be declared the winner.

When he signed up for the election, Boudreaux said he felt that both Landrieu and Kennedy are out of touch with the economic situation of the average American.

Senators speak in generalities about programs to help people, Boudreaux said, but those programs end up being 90-day solutions to multi-year problems.

“They’re having hearings, but they’re not listening,” he said.

Kennedy spokesman Lenny Alcivar said Kennedy was not going to comment on Boudreaux’s withdrawal.

“This was never a candidate of any consequence,” Alcivar said. “We wish Mr. Boudreaux well, and we hope to have his vote.”
