Evangeline Parish
Voters narrowly rejected a measure to issue $21.5 million in bonds for construction of a new Ville Platte High School.

By a vote of 3,087 to 2,975, voters rejected the proposition that would have issued the money in 30-year-bonds to be repaid with property tax revenue.

The no-vote means that the existing high school, a run-down facility with a predominantly black population, could face closure at the hands of the federal government.

The Department of Justice had asked U.S. District Judge Tucker Melancon to order the Evangeline Parish School Board to replace the facility as part of a desegregation plan.

The School Board now faces the possibility of having to bus 400 students from the school to the district’s three other high schools.

This was the second time in less than a year that the School Board had asked voters to approve the proposition.

Acadia Parish
Voters in Acadia Parish approved one new tax while voting down two others.

Acadia Parish Fire Protection District No. 3 proved to be the only winner as voters approved both measures on the ballot, one seeking a new tax and the other for a renewal.

The 10-year, annual $25-per- parcel fee that will generate about $18,000 a year passed 197 to 99. The accompanying 10-year, 5.13-mill property tax renewal worth about $185,711 a year passed 156 to 131.

A proposition asking voters to levy a five-year, 9-mill property tax expected to generate $1.9 million for the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office was defeated by a margin of 6,135 to 1,255.

The money mainly would have been used to improve deputy salaries.

In Church Point, voters rejected a 1-cent sales tax 425 to 353 that was expected to generate $500,000.

Lafayette Parish
Parish voters opted to renew all four measures on Saturday’s ballot.
