Iberville Parish
A proposition to renew a parishwide, 5-mill drainage tax  won approval by Iberville Parish voters in Saturday’s election.

Voters approved the issue with 849 supporting the measure, or 67.4 percent, and with 411 opposing it, according to complete but unofficial results from the Iberville Parish Clerk of Court’s Office.

The renewed 10-year property tax is estimated to generate $1.8 million a year.

Parish voters first approved the drainage tax in 1960.

A proposal to levy a 1-cent sales tax in St. Gabriel for infrastructure improvements and fire and police protection was removed from the ballot, officials said at the Iberville Parish Registrar of Voters Office.

It would have been dedicated to sewer and wastewater facilities, water and fire protection, streets, sidewalks, bridges, drainage and other capital expenditures.

Livingston Parish
LIVINGSTON — Voters in central Livingston Parish approved Saturday a 10-year, 15-mill property tax renewal for parks, unofficial but complete election returns show.

“Yes” votes  for the Livingston Parish Recreation District No. 5 tax renewal led “no” votes, 191 to 133, or 58.95 percent to 41.05 percent, returns from the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office show.

Turnout was 6.25 percent, said Jacques Berry, press secretary for Secretary of State Jay Dardenne. The tax was the only item on the ballot.

The district tax has paid to build, expand and maintain 18-acre community parks in the town of Livingston and in Colyell to the south.

Last approved July 18, 1998, the tax will generate about $214,000 this year. On a $150,000 house with homestead exemption, homeowners would pay $112.50 annually.

Pointe Coupee
NEW ROADS — Voters renewed a tax for Pointe Coupee Parish Sewerage District No. 1 on Saturday, 45-17, according to complete but unofficial election results.

Voters in all six precincts extended a 5-mill tax on properties subject to taxation in the district. The 10-year tax will be used for sewer maintenance and operation. The tax also will be used for sewage disposal.
