Ex-federal officer gets 10 years in sex case
Eunice man, 51, tried to entice teen on Internet
LAFAYETTE — A former federal law enforcement officer from Eunice will serve 10 years in prison for trying to entice someone whom he believed to be a teenage girl into performing sex acts on the Internet.
U.S. District Judge Tucker Melancon on Monday sentenced Randy P. Courville, 51, to 10 years without benefit of probation in federal court Monday.
Courville signed a plea agreement March 11 to one count of attempting to entice a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity.
He faced a possible maximum sentence of not less than five years nor more than 30 years, according to court records.
Prior to his arrest, Courville had been an officer with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.
He was arrested in 2007 after he began communicating online with a law enforcement officer who was pretending to be a 15-year-old girl.
Their conversations began in November 2006 and on June 13, 2007, authorities said he asked the “girl” to perform sexual acts and to send him sexually explicit pictures over the Internet.
According to a news release from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, three agencies — Tangipahoa, St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Kenner Police Department — were investigating Courville before his arrest.
When the agencies realized they were dealing with the same individual, the cases were combined and forwarded to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
The joint investigation was part of a Project Safe Childhood initiative, which teams up federal, state and local agencies, the release stated.
Upon his release, Courville will be placed on five years supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender, participate in sex offender treatment and refrain from using the Internet and associating with minors, the news release stated.
