The second-degree murder trial of a 56-year-old man accused of killing his wife in 2006 was continued Wednesday until September.

Lester Williams is accused of strangling his 52-year-old wife, Cynthia Williams, Feb. 20, 2006.

The court continued the case until Sept. 29. The reasons for the continuance of the New Iberia case are unknown because calls to District Judge Lori A. Landry went unreturned Wednesday.

Assistant District Attorney Bo Duhe said it is his policy not to comment on pending cases but he did say, “It will not impact the state’s prosecution of the case.”

Williams’ attorney, Ferdinand Valteau III, said late Wednesday that he did not know why case was continued. Jury selection had already begun in the case.

According to authorities at the time, Lester Williams called the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office and told them his wife was not breathing.

Deputies found her unresponsive on her bed inside her home on West Old Spanish Trail, on the outskirts of New Iberia.

Authorities later determined she had been strangled.

Prior to her death, Lester Williams had been arrested at least three times for domestic abuse against Cynthia Williams, who had an active protective order against her husband.

Lester Williams, who was still on probation at the time, was first arrested for violation of a protective order before murder charges were filed against him.
