NEW ORLEANS — First Circuit Court of Appeal Judge James E. “Jimmy” Kuhn is seeking election to the Louisiana Supreme Court First District seat being vacated by retiring Chief Justice Pascal Calogero Jr.

Calogero’s last day on the Court is Dec. 31. The associate justice with the most seniority will succeed Calogero.

Kuhn is one of three candidates running for the First Supreme Court District now held by Calogero, a Democrat.

“I’m running to bring leadership to the Supreme Court,” Kuhn, a Republican and native of Ponchatoula, said in a news release. “My background, legal experience and lifetime of community service have prepared me for the exciting challenges the Supreme Court faces everyday.”

Admitted to practice law 35 years ago, Kuhn has served on the First Circuit Court of Appeal since 1994. As an appellate judge, Kuhn has participated in nearly 2,700 decisions. The court’s jurisdiction covers 16 parishes, including East Baton Rouge.

Previously, Kuhn was elected to the 21st Judicial District Court in 1990, where he presided over state criminal and civil cases in Livingston, St. Helena and Tangipahoa parishes.

Kuhn established a Court Appointed Special Advocate program for juvenile offenders and an intervention initiative for nonviolent offenders that he says helped to lower recidivism rates in the tri-parish area.

Kuhn has served on the adjunct faculty of Southeastern Louisiana University for 17 years. He has also lectured before the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel and taught attorneys at the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.

A graduate of Southeastern Louisiana and Loyola University Law School, Kuhn also served in the Army National Guard and attended the Army War College National Security Seminar at Carlisle Barracks, Pa.  He is married to Cheryl Aucoin Kuhn and they have twin children, Jimmy and Jennifer, 29.

The other two candidates are Greg Guidry of the state Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal, a Republican and resident of Nine Mile Point in Jefferson Parish, and Roland Belsome of the state Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal, a Democrat who resides in New Orleans.

The First Supreme Court District includes all of St. Helena, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes as well as parts of both Orleans and Jefferson parishes.

As of July 1, the annual salaries for each of the six associate justices is over $131,009; the Chief Justice earns $143,815, Valerie Willard, the spokesperson for the High Court, said.

The primary election is Oct. 4. A runoff, if needed, will be Nov. 4. The last day to register to vote for the fall primary election is Sept. 3.
