Kitten, thrown into traffic, rescued

A kitten survived being hurled into rush-hour traffic at the top of the Mississippi River Bridge on Tuesday afternoon when a good Samaritan scooped her up off the roadway, representatives of Capital Area Animal Welfare Society said Wednesday.
Pam Bradley, of Lafayette, said she jumped out of her car into the stop-and-go traffic on the westbound lanes of the bridge after she saw someone throw the orange tabby kitten out the window of a truck.
The kitten was treated for a broken leg at an emergency animal clinic, CAAWS volunteer Pam Leavey said.
The kitten, which is estimated to be 8 weeks old, may require surgery to set her leg with pins, Leavey said. CAAWS is seeking donations to cover the cost of the $1,000 surgery.
The orange tabby was extremely dirty when she was found and appeared malnourished, Leavey said.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call CAAWS at (225) 752-5801 or East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control at (225) 774-7700.
CAAWS is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the individual responsible, Leavey said.
“There were lots of people on the bridge, somebody surely has information,” Leavey said.
The kitten will be up for adoption when she recovers completely, Leavey said.
