A memorial service is planned for a Gonzales banker who disappeared while on a diving trip in The Bahamas.

The service for Paul Callais, 39, is scheduled for July 11 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Gonzales. Family visitation starts at 9:30 a.m. and is followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass.

U.S. Coast Guard crews searched nearly 2,820 square miles of ocean for Callais before ending the search June 27.

The crew of the family-owned motor vessel Miss Glo reported Callais missing around 7 p.m. June 25. They speculated he might have fallen overboard after a heavy wave hit the ship in waters north of the Windward Passage between Cuba and Haiti about 30 miles south of Great Inagua, Bahamas.

Callais, 39, was married and the father of three.

He was the president and chief executive officer of Gonzales-based United Community Bank and a member of the Gonzales Rotary Club.

Also, for the past several years, he served on the executive council of the Istrouma Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

Callais was on a scuba diving trip with one of his three brothers when last seen.

The Miss Glo was en route from Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, to the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean Sea, about 150 miles south of the central Cuban coast.

Callais’ father, Harold Callais, died in September 2000 while scuba diving. He was 64 when he was stricken by a fatal heart attack.

Paul Callais graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and from Tulane University. He also was a graduate of the Louisiana Bankers Association School of Banking and the LSU Graduate School of Banking.
