Ascension sheriff looks ahead
GONZALES — As sheriffs throughout the state began new terms, Ascension Sheriff Jeff Wiley wanted to acknowledge his deputies for helping build the department.
He invited them to a formal dinner at the Gonzales Civic Center on Tuesday where they remembered the past few years.
“The swearing-in is about the deputies and not much about me,” said Wiley, who began his fourth, four-year term as sheriff. “That is why I wanted to make this special for them.”
Following the event, Wiley discussed the office’s accomplishments and the tasks it faces in the next four years.
He talked about the courtroom expansion, renovation of the emergency 911 call center, improvements made to the fleet of motor vehicles and the evidence room and the hiring of 91 employees as the next generation. For the future, Wiley said, his administration looks to complete the jail expansion and hopes to increase the number of training opportunities and expand its technological capabilities.
Wiley first took the office of Ascension sheriff in 1996, although his first stint with the department was in 1974 as a patrol officer before moving up to the Detective Division in 1975, specializing in juvenile justice.
His success working with juveniles led him to accept an Ascension Parish School Board position as coordinator of student services in 1980.
Eight years later, then-Sheriff Harold Tridico selected Wiley as chief criminal deputy.
