Sheriffs begin new terms
Returning officials were sworn in before July 1
July 1 is the usual day for Louisiana sheriffs to take their oaths of office, but only one “swearing-in” was held in the Westside parishes on Tuesday.
Veteran sheriffs Mike Cazes of West Baton Rouge and Brent Allain of Iberville were away from their offices on Tuesday. Since there was no change involved, they were administered their oaths early.
Cazes, who was out of state, took his oath of office from 18th Judicial District Judge Robin Free last week.
Allain, who was out of his office Tuesday, was sworn in for another four-year term by Iberville Parish Clerk of Court J.G. “Bubbie” Dupont on Friday.
In Pointe Coupee Parish, Beauregard Torres became sheriff Tuesday, succeeding veteran Sheriff Paul Raymond Smith, who was defeated by Torres in last fall’s election.
Torres received his oath from 18th Judicial District Judge James Best on Tuesday morning, but also plans a formal inauguration ceremony from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
