Lawmakers seek costs to add fluoride
Water systems with 5,000 or more hook-ups would be required to find out costs to bring fluoride levels to approved levels under a bill that won final House approval Sunday and was sent to Gov. Bobby Jindal.
A compromise version of the measure, Senate Bill 312, won House approval 78-19. It cleared the Senate on Friday 34-0.
Fluoride is a chemical com-pound found naturally in ground water that helps fight tooth decay.
State Rep. Kay Katz, R-Monroe and House handler of the bill, said the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta has called fluoride a Top 10 health achievement.
Any funds needed to add the fluoride, Katz said, would be an issue tackled by lawmakers in the future.
State Rep. Sam Jones, D-Franklin, criticized the bill. Jones said the bill imposes an unfunded mandate on local governments and said excessive levels of fluoride can be deadly.
Legislative raise protest delayed
A legislative pay increase protest won’t come off today at the State Capitol, a Louisiana Senate official said Sunday.
State Senate chief of staff Jerry Guillot said the organizers have advised the State Office of Buildings and Grounds that they needed more time to promote it and one will be held at a later date.
LegeWatch had filed for a rally permit last week. Efforts to contact officials with LegeWatch on Sunday afternoon for comment were not successful.
The planned protest is just one activity developing in the days after the Legislature approved a more than doubling of lawmakers’ base pay — from $16,800 to $37,500. The Secretary of State’s office reported in increase in requests for information regarding recall petitions.
Gov. Bobby Jindal has said he won’t veto the legislation, Senate Bill 672 sponsored by Sen. Ann Duplessis, D-New Orleans.
