SORRENTO — Mayor Brenda Melancon presented to the Town Council a proposed $912,505 budget for the 2008-09 fiscal year and suggested a video bingo parlor may be in Sorrento’s future.

The mayor’s budget report submitted to the council Tuesday anticipates $458,900 in revenue from taxes, $71,000 from licenses and permits, $346,500 from police activities, $7,000 from interest and miscellaneous items, and a fund balance of $29,105.

The budget has proposed expenditures of $165,000 for general government, $125,000 for streets and highways, $572,505 for public safety, and $50,000 in capital outlay.

A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for the next council meeting June 17 at 6 p.m. The council will vote on the budget after the hearing.

In other business, Melancon told council members that she is aware of an agreement between XL Inc. and the Super Stop at 7140 La. 22 in Sorrento to provide electronic video bingo at the Super Stop.

Video bingo games could begin as soon as late July if the town agrees to adopt an ordinance allowing video bingo within town limits, the mayor said.

Melancon also said she feels the proposed location is favorable: “We want it by the interstate, away from the residents.”

Although no action was taken at Tuesday’s meeting, Melancon said she and Councilwoman Troy Braud would meet next week to draft an ordinance permitting video bingo within the town to be considered at an upcoming meeting.
