An Army Reserve soldier who fatally shot his brother following a family dispute was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday.

Deishurnae Pope, 21, of Baker, admitted firing two close-range shotgun blasts into the chest and throat of his brother, Kwashaunna Chachere, 33, after witnessing his brother beating his sister.

Pope pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter on Nov. 26. On Tuesday, state District Judge Mike Erwin sentenced Pope. In addition to jail time, Erwin ordered Pope to serve five years of probation after his release from prison.

After the sentencing, Pope’s attorney Steven Young, said his client’s crime was an unpremeditated crime of passion.

“There are no winners here,” Young said. “You have a mom who is grieving over her two sons. This is just a sad situation.”

On the night of the killing, police said Pope’s mother and the sister called the Baker Police Department to report that Chachere took his sister’s car without permission after an argument.

Police were called back to the home at 1406 Plaza Drive later that night after the mother reported she had returned home and found Chachere lying in a pool of blood, police have said.

After questioning the family, police determined Chachere and his sister had argued after he returned home in his sister’s car.

When Pope entered the home and noticed his sister had a black eye, presumably from Chachere slamming a door into her face, he retrieved the shotgun and fired the fatal shots, police have said.

At the time of Pope’s arrest on Feb. 14, 2007, police said Chachere had a history of physical abuse against his family.

Calls made to prosecutors by The Advocate were not returned Tuesday afternoon.
