Southern University could have a new chancellor chosen on Saturday.
Southern University System President Ralph Slaughter said on Wednesday that he will recommend his top choice to the full Southern Board of Supervisors on Saturday.
The current three finalists are Ray Belton, Southern University at Shreveport chancellor; Kofi Lomotey, Fisk University executive vice president and provost in Tennessee; and Napoleon Moses, Alcorn State University vice president for academic affairs in Mississippi.
The three were chosen last week as finalists from a group of 16 who were chosen to publicly interview on campus. Then six were picked as semifinalists.
Slaughter said he has not made his top choice yet, but he will by Saturday, when the three finalists are all expected to be present during Southern’s board meeting.
Slaughter said he “hopes” the board will vote to approve his recommendation that day.
“We’ve provided them with regular updates,” Slaughter said.
Southern board chairman Myron Lawson of Alexandria said he feels strongly about the quality of the finalists and the search process.
But Lawson said he is unsure if the board will “reach a comfort level” with Slaughter’s recommendation soon enough to make a final decision on Saturday.
“I can’t say for certain if we will,” Lawson said.
The wild card, which both Slaughter and Lawson acknowledged, is interim Southern Chancellor Margaret Ambrose, who applied for the job but was not offered an interview.
Slaughter admitted a couple of board members could “make a run” to hire her on Saturday.
Slaughter praised the extensive publication and scholarship records of Moses and Lomotey, who was the first black department chairman at LSU.
