LAFAYETTE (AP)- Interstate 10 is now open, according to Louisiana State Police

Six cars of a freight train derailed Saturday, causing a hydrochloric acid leak that forced thousands of people to leave homes, businesses and a nursing home within one mile of the wreck.

The spilled acid sent a toxic cloud over the area, and at least five people, including two railroad workers, were taken to a hospital and treated after complaining of skin and eye irritation, said Lafayette Parish sheriff's Lt. Craig Stansbury.

State police shut down a six-mile stretch of Interstate 10 both east and west Saturday night while they attempted to upright one of the rail cars.

The highway was closed for just over an hour, said Lt. Doug Cain, with one railcar successfully restored to an upright position.

Emergency workers would be at the area and work through the night, Cain said.

LAFAYETTE- State Police and the Department of Transportation have closed Interstate 10 in the Lafayette area as a precautionary measure in response to the Burlington Northern Sante Fe train derailment near Ambassador Caffrey Thwy.  The train derailment has resulted in the release of hazardous materials which have the potential to impact surrounding areas.  Nearby areas have been evacuated.

To ensure continued public safety, State Police and DOTD have closed Interstate 10 both eastbound and westbound between LA Hwy 93 and Interstate 49. Motorists traveling in this area will be diverted from I-10 eastbound at LA Hwy 93 to LA Hwy 98.  From LA Hwy 98 traffic will continue onto LA Hwy 182 to Pont des Mouton.  Traffic will then be directed to Interstate 49 and returned to Interstate 10 eastbound.

Westbound traffic on Interstate 10 will be diverted northbound onto Interstate 49 and then to U.S. Hwy 190 west.  Motorist will continue west on U.S. Hwy 190 to LA Hwy 26 where they can re-access Interstate 10 westbound at Jennings.
