Delay likely on vote for bus station zoning

LAFAYETTE — A scheduled vote to repeal a controversial zoning change that allows for the Greyhound bus station to move to Moss Street will likely be delayed.

The City-Parish Council was scheduled to vote Tuesday on the issue.

But council member Kenneth Boudreaux, who is pushing for the zoning repeal, said Friday that he will recommend delaying the vote until June 3.

The move would give the city-parish administration more time to negotiate a deal with Greyhound to move instead into a planned city transportation center downtown.

“Something that started as a far-fetched, unrealistic objective seems to be getting closer and closer to reality,” Boudreaux said in a written statement.

“… This extension will allow Greyhound additional time to fulfill its mission of being a good corporate neighbor. “

Greyhound is considering an offer from the city to join the planned Rosa Parks Transportation Center at the site of the post office at Jefferson and Cypress streets.

The Moss Street bus station would be at the site of the old Iberia Bank building at Moss and Matthieu streets.

The council last year approved rezoning the area from general business to light industrial to allow for a bus station, despite opposition from area residents and recommendations against the rezoning by city-parish planners.

Boudreaux, who like most of the council this year is newly elected, is asking that the zoning change be revisited.

A repeal of the zoning change would stop the planned bus station if not successfully challenged by Greyhound.

The Lafayette Greyhound station is now downtown within blocks of the planned Rosa Parks Transportation Center.
