St. James man pleads guilty in ’07 death
GONZALES — Just after his trial began Wednesday, Trevis Nelson pleaded guilty to criminal charges in the 2007 death of a Napoleonville motorist.
After testimony of the first witness and a short recess, Nelson, 21, of the St. James community, changed his plea to guilty to vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated, the office of District Attorney Tony Falterman reported in a news release.
Nelson was arrested July 30 after colliding with a vehicle driven by Ricky Landry, 53, on La. 70, near the Ascension-St. James Parish line.
Based on witnesses’ statements and other evidence, State Police determined Nelson was intoxicated.
Following the plea change, Judge Ralph Tureau of 23rd Judicial District Court ordered a pre-sentencing investigation in this matter, deferring sentencing to a later date.
Nelson faces a sentence of not less than five years and no more than 30 years and a fine of up to $15,000.
Assistant District Attorney Benjamin L. Johnson prosecuted this case.
Landry was the brother-in-law of Donald Carmouche, who formerly served as district attorney of the 23rd Judicial District.
