Baton Rouge Police will have random seat-belt checkpoints around the city today to June 7 as part of the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign, police spokesman Cpl. L’Jean McKnee ly said in a news release.

The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission gave Baton Rouge Police a grant to fund the program, McKneely said.

“This program will allow uniformed officers the opportunity to work overtime in the Baton Rouge area looking for violators who aren’t wearing their seat belts,” McKneely said.

Officers hope that the checkpoints will encourage people who don’t use seat belts to change their habits, McKneely said.

Wow I cant think of a better way to spend a Saturday ! If each officer writes one ticket every 15min this should more than cover the overtime pay. So where is the surplus revenue going?

I hope the police also ticket parents who refuse to put their babies, toddlers, children in car seats and or if of appropriate weight and height in a seat belt.

This is a waste of resources. This will go from looking at the cars as they pass to detaining people with the Police sticking their heads in the window in about 5 min.

JT, you get to go to the head of the class !! You are the ONLY one who recognizes this for what it is: a FEDERALLY funded program to allow local cops to snoop into your business. There always have been and always will be Amerikans who have no problem with government doing anything they choose to do.

How hard is it to ride around a see if motorist are wearing their seat belts. Why waste taxpayers money for a special operation like this.

Ben, To the feds, this is not a "waste" as you and I recognize it to be. Amerikans are being conditioned to accept roadblocks/inspections, etc. We are rapidly goosestepping our way down the road to a total police state, this is but one more, minor step. The truly sad aspect of all this is most Amerikans don't have the presence of mind to comprehend what's taking place under their noses.

Why aren't they conducting a DRUNK REPEAT OFFENDER checkpoint? Those seem to be far more of a danger to other motorists.

Why not run liability insurance checks. I'd much rather get those deadbeats off the street.

What will the police be checking for next if I have clean underwear? Why should the government be concerned about if I wear a seatbealt or not.?

It's call lobbying. This country is run by big money and laws get created to benefit the big companies that funded the elected officials. If you think that the law was put in place because the government is concern with your safety. You are still living in LalaLand. I agree with mark "Land of the free?".
