It is with great sadness that the family of Alton Brown Sr. announces his death, which occurred Thursday, May 8, 2008. He died peacefully while surrounded by family at the Baton Rouge General Medical Center. He was 86. Memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 4848 Hollywood St. Mr. Brown leaves to cherish his memory nine children, Doris Brown Ausbon and husband Edward, Sunshine, Rosemary Washington Presley and husband Curtis, Alton Brown Jr. and wife Ernestine, Margaret Ruth Brown Shaw and husband Joseph, Ronald Brown, Johnny Brown, Dorothy Brown Selders and husband Ronald, Cathy Kaufman and husband Joseph, and Yvette Lemon, all of Baton Rouge; 23 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Wilbert and William Brown, both of Baton Rouge. Culotta, Gladys Celestin
Gladys Celestin Culotta passed away peacefully at her home in Baker with her family at her side on Sunday, May 11, 2008. She was 76, born Feb. 26, 1932, in Ascension Parish. Retired as a regional floral manager of National Supermarkets, she loved flowers and was a talented floral designer. Visiting at St. Isidore Catholic Church, 5657 Thomas Road, Baton Rouge, on Saturday, May 17, from noon until memorial Mass at 1 p.m. Family and friends are invited to gather at the home of Cathy and David Doran following the Mass. Interment of her ashes at Knox Cemetery will be later in the evening. She is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Ann Celestin and Cathy Celestin Doran; two sons, Charles Michael Celestin and Clint Celestin; five brothers, Lafayette Warren Cook, John Melvin Cook, Richard Arlin Cook, Donald Ray Cook and Roy Gene Cook; five grandchildren, Michael Higgins, Shellene Moseley, Megan Celestin, Nicole Celestin and Chase Celestin; and many other family and friends, including son-in-law, David Doran; and daughters-in-law, Debbie Celestin, Pat Murphy and Blanca Celestin. She shared two pets, Missy and Buddy, with her son, Mike, and daughter-in-law, Debbie. Preceded in death by her parents, Lafayette Warren Cook and Edna Bennett Cook; her first husband, the father of her children, Charles Fergus Celestin; a grandson, Eric Brandon Higgins; and her second husband, A.J. Culotta. The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the many years of care and kindness given to her by the staff of the Baton Rouge General Medical Center and Ochsner Medical Clinic and Hospital as well as to STAT Home Health and St. Joseph’s Hospice.
Dake, Levina Pulliam “Vina”
Mother to many, mother of none. She was Aunt Vina to her many nieces, nephews and friends. Born Aug. 17, 1917, she died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Flannery Oaks Guest House. She was the oldest of eight children of the late John N. and Lizzie Jenkins Pulliam. She helped mold the younger children into caring and responsible adults. She was an active member of Zoar Baptist Church, working with the Sunday school class as long as she was physically able. She graduated as valedictorian from Baton Rouge High School in 1936. She was a member of Zoar Baptist Church for more than 30 years. She was head cashier for one of the largest wholesale food stores at that time. During World War II, she began working for a doctor at his private practice and went to school and became a licensed practical nurse and continued to work for doctors for the rest of her working life. At age 40, she married Claude Dake and enjoyed 18 years as a housewife before his death in 1976. She is survived by three sisters, Irma Watts, Yvonne Slaton and husband James and Johnnie Sullivan and husband Frank; brother, Reggie Pulliam and wife Jo Ann; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Dake; brothers, Seaborn and Huey Pulliam; and sister, Audrey Browning. Pallbearers will be her nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Flannery Oaks Guest House for their care for the past 10 years and her sitters, Irene and Ora. A homemaker and a native of Dutchtown, she died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at her home in Geismar. She was 84. Visitation at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Gonzales, on Friday, May 16, from 9:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Cary Bani, celebrant. Interment in Prairieville Community Cemetery. She is survived by a son, James Dale Decoteau, Dutchtown; a daughter and son-in-law, Delores “Dee-Dee” and Verney Becnel Jr., Dutchtown; two sisters, Odiel Bourgeois, St. Amant, and Virgie Delaune, Dutchtown; and a brother, Herbert Landry, Dutchtown. Preceded in death by her husband, Herman P. Decoteau; parents, Demas D. and Louise Hill Landry; brother, Francis Landry; and sister, Isabelle Landry Braud. Pallbearers will be Carroll Bourgeois, Matthew Decoteau, Purvis Lessard, Gerald “Whitey” Braud, Myles Mier and George Valentine Jr. Honorary pallbearer is Herbert Landry. Doughty, Olive Ann
Olive passed away at Ollie Steele Burden Manor at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008. She was 75, born on Aug. 31, 1932, in Tullos. She graduated from Northeast Louisiana State College in June 1953, and immediately reported for work for the U.S. Navy, serving as one of the pioneers in computers. She began work on UNIVAC I at David Taylor Model Basin in Washington, D.C., and progressively on other advanced computers. She also was a pioneer in telecommunications real-time processing computers. She was the first in many areas. She was first in her high school graduating class at Rayville High and first in her college graduating class at Northeast Louisiana State College. During her work career, she was the first woman General Services Administration regional administrator. She received many awards during her career, including outstanding performance awards, meritorious services awards, commendable services awards, Career Woman of The Year and equal employment opportunity award. While GSA administrator of Region 7, which included Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma, she initiated the request for the new Russell B. Long Federal Building in Baton Rouge, donated excess property to BREC on Sharp Road, renovated the Custom House in New Orleans along with all her duties in managing a $200 million annual budget. She retired from the government after serving 35 years and came back to Baton Rouge. She was an avid bridge player and was fortunate in selecting Broadmoor United Methodist as her church. She was a member of the “New Spirit” Sunday School class and served as the first president. Special thanks to minister Ken Carroll for his guidance, to the Sunday School members and Jeanette Goodson. Olive was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Eunice and Alvin Oliver Doughty Sr.; and sister, Esther Brimer Brown. Survived by a sister, Mary Jane Doughty Daniel and her husband, Richard Carlton Daniel Sr.; and a brother, Alvin Oliver Doughty Jr. and wife Marie Wilbert Doughty. A retired business owner of Lumber/Building Supplies, he died at 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008, in Auburn, N.Y. He was 88 and a resident and native of Auburn. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater from 1942 to 1945. Visiting at Langham Funeral Home, Auburn, was on May 9, and funeral service at First Presbyterian Church of Auburn was on May 10, conducted by the Rev. Janet Newman. Survived by his wife of 65 years, Edith; daughter, Sarah Taylor, Skaneateles, N.Y.; four sons, John, Charleston, S.C., Mark, St. Francisville, Peter, Phoenix, and Tom, Canandaigua, N.Y.; brother, Alan, Auburn; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Drennen; and three sisters, Josephine, Dora and Ruth. He was a graduate of Auburn Business School, president of Auburn Rotary Club and member of Auburn and Cayuga County bank boards. Natalia went to be with her Lord on Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008. The memorial service will be at Sharon Baptist Church, 9433 Section Road, west of Port Allen, on Saturday, May 17, at 4 p.m. with visitation from 3 p.m. until service time. Natalia enjoyed meeting people and valued friends and family. Preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. Arno Easterly Sr. and Alice Denham Easterly. Survived by her children, Darla Cazes, Jim Cazes, of New Roads, and Jason Cazes, of Seattle. Other survivors include a sister, Alice Easterly Roberts and husband Ed, of Butte, Mont.; and brothers, Arno Easterly Jr. and wife Clara, of Bossier City, and Glenn Easterly and wife Wanette, of San Antonio; and sisters-in-law, Pat Thomas and Bobbie Joyce Bauer, both of Baton Rouge. “Nat” was a graduate of Central High, Class of 1958, and previously attended St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Central. Finley, Ilah Grace Hogg
Ilah Grace Hogg Finley, 88, passed away at Northshore Regional Medical Center in Slidell on Wednesday, May 14, 2008. Beloved wife for 67 years of the late Joseph Jerome Finley, recently deceased, mother of Jane F. Shank, of Baton Rouge, and Ila F. Dieterich, of Slidell, and mother-in-law of Glenn H. Dieterich Jr. Also survived by six grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Watson Hogg and Mary Bass Hogg; sister, Tommie Ruth Hogg Griffith; and brother, Donald Hogg. A native of Columbia, Miss., she graduated from Columbia High School as valedictorian and attended business college in Jackson, Miss. Mrs. Finley was a resident of New Orleans for 35 years and Diamondhead, Miss., for 24 years and resided in Slidell the last six years. Originally a Baptist, Mrs. Finley joined the Presbyterian Church and with her husband was a member of Presbyterian churches in Little Rock, Ark., Paragould, Ark., New Orleans and Diamondhead. A gifted seamstress, she sewed robes for the first minister and charter choir of Oak Park Presbyterian Church in New Orleans, where she was director of youth activities for 12 years. A talented horticulturist, Mrs. Finley served as president of Terrace Garden Club in New Orleans for four years, president for four years of the New Orleans area garden club presidents organization, the New Orleans Flora and Design Study Garden Club and president of the Diamondhead Garden Club for three years. She also held membership in the New Orleans Metropolitan Women’s Club, where she served as art chairman for several years. Mrs. Finley was recognized in local and statewide exhibitions with a multitude of blue ribbons for her art, children’s clothing design and floral arranging and design. She was a popular guest speaker and lecturer to garden clubs across southeast Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast on topics ranging from bonsai, wildflower stationery design and the brewing of fresh herbal teas and homemade berry cordials. With her husband, Mrs. Finley enjoyed fishing and was a member of the Diamondhead Boaters Association. Well-known for her cooking skill, her original recipes were published in several cookbooks. She was also a talented bridge player and was a member of the Krewe of Kamehameha and the Diamondhead Krewe of Mardi Gras. Shirley Elzie Frazier, 77, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at his home at The Bluffs in St. Francisville. He was a native of Electra, Texas, and a retired field service engineer with Albany International. Simpson, Calvin Littrell “Q”
Calvin Littrell “Q” Simpson passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. He was 81, born in Houston on Jan. 31, 1927. After graduating from San Jacinto High School in Houston, he served in the U.S. Navy before attending the University of Texas, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. After graduation, he married his wife, Carolyn, and they moved to Baton Rouge. Q was employed for 20 years by Ethyl Corp. He later left to join Port Marine Service, where he became president and owner of the midstream fuel company started by his father-in-law. Q was a registered professional engineer. In Baton Rouge, he volunteered freely of his time to support numerous community activities. He was a longtime volunteer of Our Lady of the Lake Blood Bank. He held leadership positions in many organizations, including the Boy Scouts, where he was awarded Scouting’s highest leadership honor, the Silver Beaver Award, for his years of dedicated service. He was a longtime member of Rotary, served on the Advisory Board of Baton Rouge General Medical Center and was on the Board of Trustees of Episcopal High School. Q was also co-president of the Parents Guild of EHS. Q was a kind and gentle man who enjoyed life and dearly loved his family and friends. He will best be remembered for his quick wit and amiable disposition, and how he always went out of his way to help other people. Q was preceded in death by his parents, James Henry and Goldie Maricle Simpson, who were of Beaumont, Texas. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Carolyn Neal Simpson, of Houston; brother, James Henry Simpson Jr., of Baton Rouge; sons, Neal Simpson and his wife, Mary Ann, and Henry Littrell “Hank” Simpson, his wife, Bethany, and their children, Emily and Annabel, all of Houston; nephew, James Henry Simpson III, of Oakland, Calif.; niece, Susan Hamil, of San Diego; and other relatives, including Fay Welsh, Ron and Carrie Welsh, of Houston, Martha Cooper, of Shreveport, and Mary Jo Milby, of El Paso, Texas. Born in Perth Amboy, N.J., on Sept. 29, 1941, to Andrew Marius Smith Jr. and Audrey Bird Smith, he died in McComb, Miss., on Thursday, May 8, 2008. He graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970 in Korea. He was a publisher, author and illustrator of “Louisiana Proud,” a historical pictorial of the real Louisiana as it began and lives today through 375 original pen-and-ink illustrations. He also published, authored and illustrated three cookbooks and several children’s books. Frank was a sugarcane farmer on the family’s Belle Grove Plantation before his retirement. Dake, Levina Pulliam “Vina”
Mother to many, mother of none. She was Aunt Vina to her many nieces, nephews and friends. Born Aug. 17, 1917, she died Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Flannery Oaks Guest House. She was the oldest of eight children of the late John N. and Lizzie Jenkins Pulliam. She helped mold the younger children into caring and responsible adults. She was an active member of Zoar Baptist Church, working with the Sunday school class as long as she was physically able. She graduated as valedictorian from Baton Rouge High School in 1936. She was a member of Zoar Baptist Church for more than 30 years. She was head cashier for one of the largest wholesale food stores at that time. During World War II, she began working for a doctor at his private practice and went to school and became a licensed practical nurse and continued to work for doctors for the rest of her working life. At age 40, she married Claude Dake and enjoyed 18 years as a housewife before his death in 1976. She is survived by three sisters, Irma Watts, Yvonne Slaton and husband James and Johnnie Sullivan and husband Frank; brother, Reggie Pulliam and wife Jo Ann; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Dake; brothers, Seaborn and Huey Pulliam; and sister, Audrey Browning. Pallbearers will be her nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Flannery Oaks Guest House for their care for the past 10 years and her sitters, Irene and Ora. Doughty, Olive Ann
Olive passed away at Ollie Steele Burden Manor at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008. She was 75, born on Aug. 31, 1932, in Tullos. She graduated from Northeast Louisiana State College in June 1953, and immediately reported for work for the U.S. Navy, serving as one of the pioneers in computers. She began work on UNIVAC I at David Taylor Model Basin in Washington, D.C., and progressively on other advanced computers. She also was a pioneer in telecommunications real-time processing computers. She was the first in many areas. She was first in her high school graduating class at Rayville High and first in her college graduating class at Northeast Louisiana State College. During her work career, she was the first woman General Services Administration regional administrator. She received many awards during her career, including outstanding performance awards, meritorious services awards, commendable services awards, Career Woman of The Year and equal employment opportunity award. While GSA administrator of Region 7, which included Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma, she initiated the request for the new Russell B. Long Federal Building in Baton Rouge, donated excess property to BREC on Sharp Road, renovated the Custom House in New Orleans along with all her duties in managing a $200 million annual budget. She retired from the government after serving 35 years and came back to Baton Rouge. She was an avid bridge player and was fortunate in selecting Broadmoor United Methodist as her church. She was a member of the “New Spirit” Sunday School class and served as the first president. Special thanks to minister Ken Carroll for his guidance, to the Sunday School members and Jeanette Goodson. Olive was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Eunice and Alvin Oliver Doughty Sr.; and sister, Esther Brimer Brown. Ilah Grace Hogg Finley, 88, passed away at Northshore Regional Medical Center in Slidell on Wednesday, May 14, 2008. Beloved wife for 67 years of the late Joseph Jerome Finley, recently deceased, mother of Jane F. Shank, of Baton Rouge, and Ila F. Dieterich, of Slidell, and mother-in-law of Glenn H. Dieterich Jr. Also survived by six grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Watson Hogg and Mary Bass Hogg; sister, Tommie Ruth Hogg Griffith; and brother, Donald Hogg. A native of Columbia, Miss., she graduated from Columbia High School as valedictorian and attended business college in Jackson, Miss. Mrs. Finley was a resident of New Orleans for 35 years and Diamondhead, Miss., for 24 years and resided in Slidell the last six years. Originally a Baptist, Mrs. Finley joined the Presbyterian Church and with her husband was a member of Presbyterian churches in Little Rock, Ark., Paragould, Ark., New Orleans and Diamondhead. A gifted seamstress, she sewed robes for the first minister and charter choir of Oak Park Presbyterian Church in New Orleans, where she was director of youth activities for 12 years. A talented horticulturist, Mrs. Finley served as president of Terrace Garden Club in New Orleans for four years, president for four years of the New Orleans area garden club presidents organization, the New Orleans Flora and Design Study Garden Club and president of the Diamondhead Garden Club for three years. She also held membership in the New Orleans Metropolitan Women’s Club, where she served as art chairman for several years. Mrs. Finley was recognized in local and statewide exhibitions with a multitude of blue ribbons for her art, children’s clothing design and floral arranging and design. She was a popular guest speaker and lecturer to garden clubs across southeast Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast on topics ranging from bonsai, wildflower stationery design and the brewing of fresh herbal teas and homemade berry cordials. With her husband, Mrs. Finley enjoyed fishing and was a member of the Diamondhead Boaters Association. Well-known for her cooking skill, her original recipes were published in several cookbooks. She was also a talented bridge player and was a member of the Krewe of Kamehameha and the Diamondhead Krewe of Mardi Gras. Simpson, Calvin Littrell “Q”
Calvin Littrell “Q” Simpson passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. He was 81, born in Houston on Jan. 31, 1927. After graduating from San Jacinto High School in Houston, he served in the U.S. Navy before attending the University of Texas, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering and was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. After graduation, he married his wife, Carolyn, and they moved to Baton Rouge. Q was employed for 20 years by Ethyl Corp. He later left to join Port Marine Service, where he became president and owner of the midstream fuel company started by his father-in-law. Q was a registered professional engineer. In Baton Rouge, he volunteered freely of his time to support numerous community activities. He was a longtime volunteer of Our Lady of the Lake Blood Bank. He held leadership positions in many organizations, including the Boy Scouts, where he was awarded Scouting’s highest leadership honor, the Silver Beaver Award, for his years of dedicated service. He was a longtime member of Rotary, served on the Advisory Board of Baton Rouge General Medical Center and was on the Board of Trustees of Episcopal High School. Q was also co-president of the Parents Guild of EHS. Q was a kind and gentle man who enjoyed life and dearly loved his family and friends. He will best be remembered for his quick wit and amiable disposition, and how he always went out of his way to help other people. Q was preceded in death by his parents, James Henry and Goldie Maricle Simpson, who were of Beaumont, Texas. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Carolyn Neal Simpson, of Houston; brother, James Henry Simpson Jr., of Baton Rouge; sons, Neal Simpson and his wife, Mary Ann, and Henry Littrell “Hank” Simpson, his wife, Bethany, and their children, Emily and Annabel, all of Houston; nephew, James Henry Simpson III, of Oakland, Calif.; niece, Susan Hamil, of San Diego; and other relatives, including Fay Welsh, Ron and Carrie Welsh, of Houston, Martha Cooper, of Shreveport, and Mary Jo Milby, of El Paso, Texas. Smith III, Andrew Marius
Born in Perth Amboy, N.J., on Sept. 29, 1941, to Andrew Marius Smith Jr. and Audrey Bird Smith, he died in McComb, Miss., on Thursday, May 8, 2008. He graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970 in Korea. He was a publisher, author and illustrator of “Louisiana Proud,” a historical pictorial of the real Louisiana as it began and lives today through 375 original pen-and-ink illustrations. He also published, authored and illustrated three cookbooks and several children’s books. Frank was a sugarcane farmer on the family’s Belle Grove Plantation before his retirement. Woods, Claude E. “Hop”
A resident of Port Allen and a native of Brusly, he died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, May 8, 2008, at LSU Earl K. Long Medical Center. He was 52. Visiting at St. Mark Baptist Church, Chamberlin, on Saturday, May 17, from 9 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Joseph Riley. Interment in the church cemetery. He is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann Byrd, Ms. Rose Stevenson, Brenda Williams, Linda Stevenson and Rita Mae Williams; and eight brothers, Mr. Lee Dell Woods Jr., Joseph Woods, pastor, Mr. Clarence Williams, Wilson Williams, Michael Williams, Wilford Stevenson, James Stevenson and Earnest Wilson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Leedell Woods Sr. and Ms. Rose Mary Williams; grandmother, Isadora Johnson Woods; and aunt, Ms. Maedell Washington. He enjoyed singing and preaching the gospel. Hall Davis & Son Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
