LAFAYETTE — Emergency crews were clearing roads and repairing power lines in Lafayette’s Oil Center from damage blamed on a suspected tornado, one of nine reports of twisters in Acadiana received by the National Weather Service Thursday morning.

No injuries had been reported, but some streets in the Oil Center were closed, and there was scattered structural damage.

“Just a lot of downed trees right now,” said a Lafayette Police spokesman, Cpl. Paul Mouton.

The National Weather Service also received reports of a tornado west of Lafayette, near Scott, and seven reports of early morning tornadoes in Vermilion Parish.

The National Weather Service’s Lake Charles office had yet to confirm any of the reported tornadoes.

Tornado activity was reported by residents in Abbeville, Gueydan, Intracoastal City, Kaplan, Maurice, Mouton Cove and Nunez, according to Sheriff Mike Couvillon.

No injuries were reported in Vermilion Parish, but the storms downed power lines and caused moderate damage to a few homes and businesses.

Heavy wind damage had also been reported in St. Martin, Calcasieu and Allen parishes.
