FRANKLINTON — Two prisoners in a Washington Parish work-release program walked away from their dormitory sometime around 3 a.m. Tuesday, Washington Parish Sheriff’s Capt. Fred Kirby said.

The prisoners were assigned to a work-release program based in Varnado, where inmates routinely work jobs and are under minimal security, Kirby said. The two escapees, present for bed check, were last seen around 1:30 a.m.

One of the men, Emile Robertson, 40, of Lubbock, Texas, was found later Tuesday in Franklinton, Kirby said.

The other man, Kevin Jefferson, 40, last known address of 139 Blueberry Court, Franklinton, remained a fugitive Tuesday evening, he said.

Robertson and Jefferson were serving time on drug related convictions, he said.

To qualify for a work-release program, inmates have to have no more than two years remaining on their sentences, were not convicted of violent crimes and must have earned the privilege through good behavior, Kirby said.

Anyone with information on Jefferson’s whereabouts is asked to call the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office at (985) 839-3434.
