PLAQUEMINE — The Iberville Parish School Board on Monday night started the process to build two buildings for its new Science, Mathematics and the Arts Academies.

The board unanimously approved a resolution to advertise for the sale of $40 million in bonds, and to seek approval for sale of the bonds from the state Bond Commission.

The two academies will start operation this fall with three grades.

The West Iberville Academy will meet at the site of the current E.J. Gay Middle School.

The Eastside Academy will meet in temporary buildings on the grounds of the St. Gabriel Community Center.

Discussion of the plan started with board members recoiling in mock horror when board President Melvin Lodge mistakenly said the bond issue would be for $400 million.

If there are no snags, bids for the sale of the $40 million in bonds will be opened and awarded at a special meeting at 11:30 a.m. July 11.

In an unrelated matter, athletics supervisor John Bueche reported on penalties imposed on the White Castle High athletic program by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.

The penalties are for the participation by a student who transferred from California to White Castle and played football and basketball before moving back to California.

The student was determined to have violated residency rules, including living for a time with an uncle with only a notarized statement from his mother, instead of a court order.

The school will be fined $800, will forfeit regular season and playoff football victories and 24 basketball games. Head football coach Ferrante Dominique and head basketball coach Ronald Johnson must attend an LHSAA education and certification class.

Bueche said he believes there was deception by the student and his family.

He said he will ask parish coaches to report transfers who join athletic teams and will review each case.
