La. sets tax holiday on storm supplies

An upcoming state sales-tax holiday on flashlights, portable generators and other supplies aims to help Louisiana shoppers prepare for the hurricane season.

The tax holiday is set for May 24-25.

This is believed to be the first time the state has offered such a tax holiday for hurricane-readiness supplies before the June 1 start of the storm season. The state expects to lose about $2 million in tax revenue because of the weekend.

There are limits to the break. It applies only to the state’s portion of sales tax on purchases of certain items up to $1,500. Sales taxes levied by other entities still will apply.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue says all businesses that sell the eligible items must participate, with some exceptions: airports, convenience stores, entertainment complexes and hotels and lodging facilities.

Eligible items include: batteries, excluding vehicle and boat batteries; carbon monoxide detectors; cell-phone chargers and batteries; fuel tanks, flashlights and candles; non-electric food coolers; portable generators and self-powered radios; storm shutter devices; tie-down kits and waterproof sheeting.
