ST. AMANT—A stretch of Black Bayou Road was closed to traffic today because of a propane leak, the director of the Ascension Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

Rick Webre said Black Bayou between O’Neal and Roddy roads has been closed since about 7 p.m. Thursday and will remain closed until about 7 p.m. today.

The leak of the flammable, but not poisonous propane occurred when a contractor was dismantling a water treatment facility on Black Bayou Road and Hubert Young Road, Webre said.

Residents in the area were not at risk as the nearest house was about 300 yards from the leaking tank, Webre said.

Webre said the State Police Hazmat team, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the St. Amant Volunteer Fire Department were on site.

Burning the leaking propane began Thursday night and was completed this morning, Webre said.

Black Bayou will remain closed today for cleanup operations, he said.
