World War II veterans to visit D.C. memorial

Eleven Baton Rouge World War II veterans will fly to Washington, D.C., on Saturday to visit the World War II Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery, a news release says.

Nine of the 11 are members of the American Legion Nicholson Post 38 on Wooddale Boulevard.

The United Airways flight will depart from Lafayette on Saturday morning and return around 8 p.m.

The Baton Rouge veterans will be accompanied by other World War II veterans from all over Louisiana.

The nine Baton Rouge members of American Legion Nicholson Post 38 are Post Commander Oliver Markland Jr., Kirk Germany, Ted Castillo, George Schmidt, James Welsh, Ernest Goff, Burnell Hobgood, Calvin Elliott and Cleve Leblanc.

The Baton Rouge veterans going on the trip who are not members of the post are Buddy Boudreaux and Dr. George Jones.
