Tractor-trailers collide in WBR; traffic delayed
PORT ALLEN — Two tractor-trailer trucks collided Thursday morning, causing intermittent traffic delays for several hours on La. 415 in West Baton Rouge Parish, State Police reported.
The incident occurred as Clarence Knighten, 30, of Baton Rouge, was driving an empty mail truck north in the right lane of La. 415, north of La. 76, according to a news release issued by Trooper Johnnie Brown, spokesman for Louisiana State Police Troop A.
Marshall Leonard, 37, of Zachary, was driving directly behind Knighten at the time, with Leonard’s 18-wheel tractor-trailer hauling a cargo of acid, Brown said.
When Knighten slowed his truck to make a right turn, it was struck from behind by Leonard’s rig, causing severe damage to the front of Leonard’s truck and the rear of the truck driven by Knighten, Brown said.
The State Police Environmental Section was called out to deal with possible hazardous materials, though there were no apparent leaks, Brown said.
State Police remained on the scene to monitor the vehicle-removal process.
The La. 415 was closed to southbound traffic from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The lanes carrying northbound traffic were closed off and on until the scene was cleared at 11:40 a.m., troopers reported.
Both drivers sustained minor injuries and were taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. Troopers cited Leonard for careless handling of hazardous materials.
