Iberia Parish workers get 3% raise
NEW IBERIA — Employees of Iberia Parish government will see a 3 percent increase in pay starting with their next paychecks, officials said Wednesday.
Iberia Parish President Ernest Freyou said the call to increase salaries came after a survey was commissioned by the Parish Council to determine if the parish’s salaries were comparable to others.
The 3 percent increase was figured by combining regular pay and lump sum payments, which are given to employees twice a year from proceeds derived from off-track betting in the parish, and then adding 3 percent to the total. He said it will probably cost the parish an additional $78,000 per year.
With the council’s action Wednesday, eligible employees also will receive one more lump sum payment July 1 from the off-track betting proceeds before the payments are absorbed into the general fund.
“We’d like to start putting that money in their paychecks right now,” Freyou said. Freyou said that the parish likely will begin working toward a more merit-based type of pay system.
“I won’t say that across the board pay raises will cease but we will have merit pay to reward those who are working hard,” Freyou said.
The council approved a measure to pay Sally Angers $62,351 for the newly created position of chief administrative officer. Angers previously worked as Freyou’s executive assistant.
Freyou asked for a pay rate of $67,000 but the council denied the request.
