Chase ends with man in custody; deputy slightly injured in crash
A Springfield man led Livingston and Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputies on a chase along Interstate 12 and a busy Hammond commercial strip Wednesday, leaving two collisions and an injured deputy, authorities said.
The man was able to elude authorities in a Hammond neighborhood after the car chase ended.
Hammond Assistant Police Chief Kenny Corkern talked with the man’s relatives, who persuaded the fugitive to surrender to Corkern, authorities said Wednesday.
Livingston Parish deputies spotted Andre Bertel Fox McKay, 18, 25749 McCarroll Road, Springfield, about 7:40 a.m. near I-12 in Albany, Livingston Parish deputies said in a statement Wednesday.
McKay was wanted on parish warrants involving a previous incident with deputies, said Deputy Perry Rushing, Sheriff’s Office spokesman. McKay drove onto I-12 eastbound, with deputies in pursuit.
One of the deputies drove in front of McKay to slow him down, but McKay rammed the deputy’s patrol car on I-12 about a half-mile west of Interstate 55, sending the patrol car crashing into guardrails.
The Livingston Parish deputy, who suffered a minor head injury in the wreck, was released from North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond after treatment, deputies said.
Another deputy continued chasing McKay into Hammond, where McKay collided with a Ford van at Morrison Boulevard and Palmetto Street.
Boxed in, McKay fled on foot into a nearby residential area. Police dogs and a sheriff’s helicopter tracked McKay for a time, but he escaped by getting a ride out of the neighborhood.
After surrendering to police, McKay was issued tickets in Hammond for hit-and-run and careless operation of a motor vehicle.
State Police booked him at Tangipahoa Parish Prison in Amite with aggravated flight from an officer, hit-and-run driving, vehicular negligent injuring and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
McKay was expected to be booked Wednesday evening in Livingston Parish Prison in Livingston on warrants for disturbing the peace, interfering with a police officer, battery on a police officer and resisting arrest by flight.
