Ex-teacher pleads no contest to battery
GREENSBURG — A former St. Helena Parish social studies teacher and coach pleaded no contest to a simple battery charge after being accused of grabbing a female student’s buttocks last fall, a state prosecutor said Tuesday.
Kendric Stewart, 32, who resigned from St. Helena Parish Central High School on Nov. 16, entered the plea Friday before Judge Bruce Bennett of 21st Judicial District Court, prosecutor Richard McShan said.
McShan said Bennett gave Stewart a six-month suspended sentence, two years on probation and fines and court costs; prohibited him from teaching in Louisiana during his probation and required him to apologize to the girl.
McShan, an assistant district attorney, said he wasn’t sure what type of coach Stewart was nor were school officials who were contacted Tuesday, but Stewart had asked the girl who made the allegations to work as a statistician with him.
McShan said Stewart had been accused of lifting up the skirt of another juvenile student but that student would not come forward.
The girl allegedly grabbed by Stewart showed up at a motion hearing Friday where Stewart entered his plea and apologized for his actions, McShan said.
Superintendent Amy Westbrook said the alleged inappropriate actions came to light last fall after the girl’s parents notified law enforcement authorities.
Stewart tendered his resignation, which the board accepted Dec. 13, board secretary Leatrice Reid said.
