Perrilloux dismissed from LSU football team

(AP) -- LSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux was kicked off the defending national championship team Friday after a college career marked by legal and disciplinary problems.

Perrilloux "didn't fulfill his obligation as an LSU student-athlete," coach Les Miles said in a statement. "Ryan was given every opportunity to be a part of this football team."

Perrilloux, a sophomore, was a backup to Matt Flynn last season. He showed glimpses of great promise, drilling receivers downfield or punishing tacklers while running the option.

He played sparingly in LSU's victory over Ohio State for the national title, but the starting job next season appeared his provided he could avoid trouble off the field.

Perrilloux's lawyer, Nathan Fisher, declined comment Friday. Phone calls to the home of Perrilloux's mother in LaPlace, La., went unanswered.

The quarterback is expected to finish the spring semester, LSU officials said. He must do so to remain eligible to play next season if he transfers.

Perrilloux was suspended last summer and during recent spring drills. He was on the fringe of a counterfeiting investigation and was caught trying to enter a Baton Rouge casino with false identification. He also was involved in a nightclub fight in November, causing him to miss a game at Alabama. He was cleared of wrongdoing.

Miles again suspended Perrilloux, whose father died Feb. 7, in mid-February after he missed a team meeting, skipped some classes and was late for some conditioning workouts.

Perrilloux had to meet academic requirements and do extra conditioning before he was reinstated April 6, in time to go with the Tigers to meet President Bush at the White House. Perrilloux was not allowed to play in LSU's spring game.

Before his last reinstatement, Miles said Perrilloux had been doing better with classwork. During the spring, redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee and junior Andrew Hatch, a transfer from Harvard, split time as the quarterback of the Tigers.

Appearing in 12 of LSU's 14 games last season with two starts, Perrilloux completed 51 of 75 passes (68 percent) for 694 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Perrilloux also rushed 50 times for 207 yards and two touchdowns.

Perrilloux's second start came in the Southeastern Conference championship game, when Flynn was too hurt to play. Perrilloux was 20-of-30 passing for 243 yards and a touchdown in a 21-14 victory over Tennessee.

Perrilloux was widely considered the nation's most sought quarterback recruit when he played at East St. John High School in Louisiana.

Funny the number of people who say "it is about time" or "should have kicked him off long ago". None of his offenses were all that bad really. I fully support Miles for kicking him off the team, but I support Miles even more for giving someone who has had several minor offenses every opportunity to set things straight. Unfortunately for RP, he did not have that maturity level. There are 3 ways for coaches to handle this sort of thing: 1. Kick them off the first offense - WRONG WAY 2. Let the players run the program - WRONG WAY 3. Educate and father the kids who make errors, give them ample opportunities to right the ship and if they do not, send them on there way with a "I told you so!" - CORRECT WAY......THE MILES WAY which I fully support.

"Hate" is a bad look... and jealousy is definitetly a sickness... Let's be real. LSU doesn't want his kind there anyway unless "they" can do something for them (i.e. bring in more revenue as "students"-athletes, emphasis on the athletes part. Hmpf!) Should have went to an HBCU...SMH...Anywho that's just my 2-cents. Carry on!

He DID get what he deserved! Obviously, the kid is nothing but a thug and in my opinion should be treated like one. He should not be given chance after chance to "make wrong right", when he's showed no remorse. If we let people like him get away with "minor" crimes then who's to say they won't end up like Michael Vick???

Hey hey, now! Let's not be too hard on the guy. Unless you have inside info on why he left, don't be so quick to judge. Pressures mount up and I'm sure being the star student athlete of the best team in the NCAA wasn't easy. If he's "wasted his talent" it's his to waste. Try to remember this guy won us more than a few games. Unless you've been in his shoes don't be so quick to judge. And there's no reason to be so angry about it -- LSU always comes up with a great QB.

We all have to realize that this is the life of a young man. To let him continue on the path he has been on would only lead to a bigger fall later in his life. Who is the better quaterback should not matter. Whether he would be an asset to the team should not matter. What matters is that this person has been shown that he must meet his responsiblities or there will be consequeces and now he may change his ways before it is too late.

Sweeeeeeeeeeet!!!! It's about time Cecil Collins Jr. get's kicked off for good. I never wanted to see him in a LSU uniform to begin with. (wish he would've gone to UT from the start) Somebody should've known that he would be a constant problem in the program even before he signed. As a senior in high school, he wouldn't ride the team bus to away games. Instead, he was so much better than that, he drove his Navigator. Maybe the students can "wish him well" when he takes his pregnant girlfriend back to a bar.

As a person who played college football, and is currently a hgh school coach in Texas, I hope that this erves as a wake up call. RP was given many chances. He was given many warnings. He did not make the plays. As a man, it is a requirement to 'make plays' in life. He didn't get it done. RP's scholarship should be given to a walk-on who has made the plays: participation in off-season conditioning, going to class, community service, etc. I hope that RP can turn things around...not because of his athletic ability. I would not want him to be like some of the 'non-playmakers' that I knew from my college days. They are old, bitter men.

Wow, you people are harsh. He failed his classes this semester, pure and simple. It is tough to concentrate on school when you lose a family member as he did; I lost two relatives within three weeks in my last year at LSU. BUT, I still managed to go to class and take my finals! AND graduate. I didn't have all the pressure that he had from chuckleheads like you, though. Nor did I have a tutor do my homework and feed me the answers to tests...wait a minute...now I get it. So he had all of these support systems to help take the pressure off, and he still screwed up. Too bad. Hope he can find a job without a college degree that will pay enough to cover the bling loan from his agent and support Baby Mama!
