Former U.S. Sen. John Breaux, D-La., endorsed state Rep. Don Cazayoux in the race for the 6th U.S. Congressional District seat Friday.

Cazayoux, D-New Roads, has often said he is a “John Breaux” Democrat. Standing in the same LSU building where Cazayoux announced his candidacy, Breaux said he believes Cazayoux will continue on his legacy of being a conservative Democrat.

Cazayoux is running against Republican Woody Jenkins, a former state representative, and three candidates not affiliated with major parties in the general election May 3.

Cazayoux said he started his campaign talking about being a John Breaux Democrat, adding that the 32-year veteran of Congress was a consensus builder.

Breaux said it is clear that people in Louisiana are sick of the bickering and gridlock because of the partisanship in Congress. He offered up Cazayoux as a person who can pick the best of both parties and blend them.

“Neither party has a monopoly on good ideas,” Breaux said. “He (Cazayoux) is the type of young man who can bridge the gap across parties and do what’s best for the district.”

Republican candidate Woody Jenkins has said that he doesn’t believe a conservative Democrat will carry weight in a the U.S. House, which he says is controlled by liberal Democrats and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Breaux said the opposite is true.

He said Republicans made the same claims when he was running for Congress but were then using the name of Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass. Breaux said that if Republicans are so concerned about Pelosi’s power, they should move to San Francisco and run against her.

“This is Don Cazayoux,” he said, noting the candidate’s eight years in the state Legislature, education and experience as a prosecutor.

“Don’t impute their record to Don Cazayoux,” Breaux said. “If you keep electing extreme partisan people to Congress, Congress will continue to be extremely partisan.”
