WASHINGTON — State Rep. Don Cazayoux continued his fundraising dominance in Louisiana’s 6th District congressional race, with the fingerprints of national Democratic party leaders and their supporters all over his latest campaign finance report.

The Federal Election Commission required the reports to be filed before midnight Monday.

The New Roads Democrat reported raising $282,405 for the one-month period ending April 13. Former Republican state Rep. Woody Jenkins reported raising $155,732 for the same period.

Cazayoux received $16,000 from Democratic House leaders, including $4,000 each from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland and Majority Whip James Clyburn of South Carolina.

Cazayoux once again gained significant fundraising help from national labor unions. The American Federation of Teachers donated $10,000 to Cazayoux as did the International Association of Bridge Structural Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers.

The lawyer also received significant help from fellow Louisiana attorneys, who made up a sizable number of Cazayoux’s individual contributors. Cazayoux also received $15,000 from the American Association of Justice, a national trial lawyers organization.

National Democratic political action committees also weighed in for Cazayoux. Our Common Values of Chicago, affiliated with House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, contributed $15,000. The San Francisco-based PAC To The Future, led by Pelosi, gave $10,000 while the Democratic-backed AmeriPAC added another $10,000.

As for the Jenkins campaign, his biggest support, $44,500, came through the Club PAC, the committee of the national conservative group Club For Growth. The Baton Rouge community newspaper editor also received $5,000 from the Louisiana for American Security PAC and $2,500 from Gun Owners of America.

Much of Jenkins’ individual contributions came from Louisiana business executives.

The latest reports show that, to date, Cazayoux raised a total of $848,000 to Jenkins’ $355,000.

The edge in the latest report enabled Cazayoux to significantly outspend Jenkins in the critical television advertising arena. Cazayoux spent $250,000 on television ads to $44,119 by Jenkins, who also spent $30,171 on telephone calls to voters.

No-party candidate Ashley Casey reported collecting $84,554, most of it funded by herself. The new-media consultant reported a personal loan of $45,000 and in-kind work for herself worth $26,580 in addition to her contributions. Casey spent the bulk of her money, $20,500, on her Web site.

The other two contenders, no-party candidate Peter Aranyosi, of Hammond, and Constitution Party candidate Randall Hayes, of Winnfield, did not file campaign-finance reports. Reports are required only for candidates who raise more than $5,000 in a reporting period.
