Three arrested in gun, knife fight
PRAIRIEVILLE — Detectives arrested three men in a Sunday morning gun and knife fight sparked by racial slurs at Southern Kumfort Gentlemen’s Club, Ascension Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Tony Bacala said in a news release.
Peter Stephens, 23, 3443 Leesburg Ave., Baton Rouge, was arrested Sunday and booked on two counts of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of two men, possession of a firearm on the premises of an alcoholic beverage outlet, and illegal use of a firearm.
John Schoen, 51, 36598 Pookey Lane, Prairieville, and Luther Powell, 41, 13211 My Chance Road, Maurepas, were arrested Monday and both booked with attempted second-degree murder in a knife attack on Stephens and hate crimes.
Bacala said Schoen and Powell, who are white, were booked with hate crimes because they allegedly called Stephens, who is black, racially charged names.
Bacala said detectives believe that during an argument in the parking lot of the lounge at 2:15 a.m. Sunday, Stephens was attacked by Schoen, Powell and a 41-year-old man.
Stephens, after being stabbed in the leg, got into his car and as he was leaving, stopped and pulled out a gun, Bacala said. This caused a second fight, which resulted in shots being fired and Stephens being cut several more times, Bacala said.
Schoen was shot in the arm and side, but his injuries were not serious. The third man was shot in the neck and remains hospitalized in serious condition, Bacala said.
Stephens was arrested Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he was brought by his mother for treatment of cuts he received during the fight.
Bacala said the investigation is continuing and further arrests are likely.
