Percentage of Louisiana population living in poverty: 19.8 percent
Percentage of nationwide population in poverty: 13.3 percent
People in poverty in Louisiana (all ages): Approximately 880,000
People under 18 in poverty in Louisiana: Approximately 329,000

Underused assistance
The Acadiana Outreach Center says government-funded programs that could help poor people often go underused. They include:
- LaCHIP - Insurance for children of lower-income families
- Veterans Affairs services
- Social Security insurance
- Social Security Disability insurance
- Medicare
- Medicaid
