Illegal activity alleged in race

Democratic leaders said Wednesday they filed a complaint with federal election officials charging illegal activity in the 6th District congressional race.

The May 3 contest pits Democrat and state Rep. Don Cazayoux of New Roads against Republican Woody Jenkins of Baton Rouge, a former state lawmaker, and three others.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which is the campaign arm of U.S. House Democrats, filed the complaint with the Federal Elections Commission.

The Democratic group claims that parts of the script of a commercial paid for by a nonprofit group suggest a collaboration with the National Republican Congressional Committee, which would violate federal election laws.

The ad, created by the conservative lobbying group Freedom’s Watch, focuses on the voting record of Cazayoux.

The commercial, which is running this week in Baton Rouge, points to votes Cazayoux cast for measures that raised taxes.

Most of the bills referenced in the ad were passed in the early part of 2000, under the leadership of former Republican Gov. Mike Foster.

Federal election laws prohibit groups like Freedom’s Watch from coordinating efforts with political committees or candidates.

Ken Spain, spokesman for the Republican committee, or NRCC, said the complaint states that,

“It is impossible to know from the available facts the exact nature of the relationship between the NRCC and the Freedom’s Watch script.”

“Democrats in Washington are clearly delusional,” Spain said. “And all of their politically motivated efforts will not distract from the fact that their handpicked candidate has a long and public record of raising taxes.”

But Brian Wolff, executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said there is more than enough evidence for the Federal Election Commission to start an investigation.

The FEC has been at a standstill for months because only two of the six commissioners have been appointed.
