Board reviews windfalls; schools recognized
NEW IBERIA — The Iberia Parish School Board reviewed several monetary windfalls during their regular Wednesday night meeting.
Superintendent Dale Henderson recognized seven Iberia Parish schools that received state rewards based on their accountability scores, LEAP, iLEAP and attendance.
Canal Street Elementary received $6,451, Delcambre Elementary drew in $20,561, Delcambre High accepted $12,156, and Dodson Street Elementary got $9,726.
Also, Magnolia Elementary received $9,177, St. Charles Street Elementary was awarded $13,018, and Sugarland Elementary received $20,086.
Amie Varnado, chief administrative officer of New Iberia, also told the School Board that Daspit Elementary would receive a $250,000 grant through the Louisiana Safe Routes to School Program and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
The money will be used to build a sidewalk starting at Buena Vista Drive, to Daspit Road, up to Santiago and all the way to Christopher Street, and then back to Daspit Road. Five crosswalks will be included, as well as drainage improvements.
This construction is to encourage students to bike or walk to school to improve physical health.
“It’s really quite a good thing for our school system,” Henderson said.
Board member Arthur Alexander was absent.
