Three men sought in copper pipe theft
East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies are looking for three men who stole 130 feet of copper piping from the 500 block of Highland Crossing.
The piping, installed several days before, was broken out of the cement about 9:30 p.m. March 21, said Casey Rayborn Hicks, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.
Security cameras captured the images of two men looking through windows and walking around the property while another man removed the copper piping, she said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (225) 389-5000 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
LSU player cited for shoving officer
LSU football player Shomari Clemons was issued a misdemeanor summons early Sunday for shoving a police officer and disturbing the peace, police said.
Clemons, 21, allegedly pushed a police officer at 1:20 a.m. after he was told to leave the 300 block of Third Street, Sgt. Don Kelly said.
When Clemons refused, the officer sprayed him with pepper spray, Kelly said.
The officer then struck the football player in the leg with a baton after Clemons grabbed his waist as if he were going for a weapon.
Clemons was issued a misdemeanor summons for simple battery of a police officer, disturbing the peace and resisting an officer, Kelly said.
Clemons has been suspended from the football team until further notice, said Michael Bonnette, LSU sports information director.
The West Monroe native signed with LSU in 2006 but did not enroll in the university and sat out the entire season.
He signed again in 2007 and is on the team’s 2008 spring roster.
Police investigating man’s slaying in car
Rickey Ricardo Mitchell Jr. was fatally shot around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday in the 2100 block of Dallas Drive, police said.
Police found the body of the 20-year-old lying partially in the road and partially inside a 1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass stopped in the southbound lane, Sgt. Don Kelly said.
Police are unsure of the motive for the shooting of Mitchell, 5429 Juarez St., Kelly said.
They were called to a nearby club to break up a couple of fights prior to the shooting, he said. It is unclear if Mitchell was at the club or involved in the fights.
It’s possible Mitchell wasn’t the intended target, Kelly said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Police Department at (225) 389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
Firefighters battle vacant building fire
Fire investigators are looking into what sparked a Monday night blaze at a vacant and deteriorating building on Eddie Robinson Sr. Drive, a Fire Department spokesman said.
Firefighters were called to the building at 1220 Eddie Robinson Sr. Drive at 7:46 p.m. and didn’t leave until almost four hours later, Howard Ward said.
It took firefighters a while to put out the blaze because the building’s condition made it dangerous for them to go inside, he said.
