East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Doug Moreau has officially applied for LSU’s athletic director job.

Moreau, a former LSU football All-American and broadcaster, was a finalist for the same job in 2001 before outgoing AD Skip Bertman was chosen, reportedly as the compromise choice.

“LSU’s been a big part of my life, and I did not want the opportunity to pass by,” Moreau said Tuesday.

The district attorney, whose term expires at the end of 2008, said he was asked to apply by the LSU-hired search firm, Parker Executive Search of Atlanta.

LSU’s athletic director search committee plans to meet Monday to determine the final three to five applicants who will be invited to campus for interviews, Jack Weiss, committee chairman, said.

More applicants could still join the pool before Monday, Weiss said.

The plan is to have a selection by April 25, when the LSU Board of Supervisors hopes to choose the next athletic director.

Bertman is employed as AD through June, when he will become athletic director emeritus to assist with fundraising and special projects for another year.

The AD applicants currently employed at colleges are Florida Atlantic University AD Craig Angelos and University of Florida Executive Associate AD Greg McGarity.

The internal candidates are three LSU senior associate ADs under Bertman: Verge Ausberry, Mark Ewing and Herb Vincent.

Other applicants who have made the cut thus far include Michael McNeely, sports industry lawyer and former Indiana University AD; William Weidner, former University of Central Florida deputy AD; and Stan Harris, a former Baton Rouge-area restaurant developer.

The only other applicant still in the running who has not yet been considered by the search committee is Joe Yates, who was the St. Louis University athletic director until 1990, Weiss said.

Moreau was seen as the top choice by several members of the LSU Board in 2001. But former Chancellor Mark Emmert reportedly favored former Oregon State AD Mitch Barnhart. Former LSU baseball coach Bertman was ultimately chosen as the compromise.
